When your Favorite Blog Suddenly Goes Bad

If you blog for any length of time you witness the rise and fall of many blogs. Some of them are good, some are fair, some are horrible and some are just amazing.
Many bloggers have written about blog crushes. They have spent time elucidating and illustrating what it is that makes them smile. They may have even gone into intricate detail about the blogs they love, it is part of a blog crush. Sometimes you cannot put your finger on why you enjoy it, you just know that you do.
Here is what you don’t see much of, the discussion of what happens when your blog crush fades into the twilight. There are a number of reasons why this could happen. Sometimes it is just because they stop blogging. It doesn’t matter why they stopped, the writing just ends and there you go.
Sometimes your blog crush fades because you come to grow tired of the gimmick and or style of their writing.
But in my book the saddest end of the blog crush is when they write something that is so shocking and offensive that you cannot continue to read them anymore. I guess that you could see it in similar terms to a breakup or divorce. And so your crush comes to a bittersweet end.

I have had that happen. Remember the first time, it really shocked me.

That's happened to me most often when I've discovered that a blogger I thought I knew harbored, shall we say, radically different philosophical or religious views from mine. Once I conclude we could never see entirely eye to eye, I have to trim down my reader. It's sad, but my reader's overloaded anyway. 😉

I appreciate that. At the moment all my crushes are long past, but who knows, one could show up at any time.

You do live in the South and you do have one of those funny accents. 😉 But there is another commenter here who also lives in the South- wasn't talking about him either. 😉

A blog has to evolve somewhat. You get your sea legs and figure it out as you go.

Do you think that the commenters on a blog can help steer it back on track if it's going awry, or are they more like rubberneckers in that case? I'm sorry if you "lost" one of your blog crushes, and I wish you a future crush to eclipse the loss. 🙂

hmmm. i live in the south! but i think i'm safe b/c i may express opinions, but never in an offensively crass way. i'm big on respect.

interesting point about watching blogs evolve. i've been at it for 9 months now (not quite 8 at my current site), and i was just realizing the other day that i've "evolved" a bit. about to give the site a facelift of sorts and perhaps even (attempt to) do a better job of streamlining.

i learn from blogs like yours.

I enjoy watching the evolution of a blog- maybe it is because I have gone through it. But sometimes they just go off of the deep end.

Any specific examples you'd care to share?

I've seen several conservative blogs become liberals too….
