Coming Attractions- A More Effective Way To Market Your Blog Posts

I don’t know about you but the trailers are among my favorite part of going to see a movie.

A good trailer is captivating, compelling and cool. A good trailer makes a huge difference in the perception that people have about a coming attraction and is a key component in creating a buzz for the film.

If I had the time and resources I would make trailers for all of my upcoming blog posts and then I would charge $100 for a bag of popcorn that cost me 50 cents to make. Hey, if the theaters can do it, why can’t I. 😉

Reality Check

Ok, so maybe a $100 per bag of popcorn is a little bit over the top as is my idea of getting you to watch a trailer promoting my upcoming posts. But the thing is that if you want to distinguish yourself and break free of the noise you have to spend some time thinking about how to do it.

That is part of the fun of blogging. You can be a mad scientist and experiment. You can make changes on the fly and test things out. There is no doubt that some things never change like the need for great content.

While you probably won’t see me putting together the really cool trailers you see at the theater you might see me do more video posts here. It is not hard to put together a video and if you practice you can get pretty good at constructing something that doesn’t look like it was made by a staff of blind chimpanzees.

    The trailers sound cool but it still comes down to time (at least for me) and how much am I willing to devote at each stop. I will be here regardless, but maybe to attract new eyes, something like this would be unique enough for you to be the ‘next big thing,’ huh?

       @bdorman264 Hi Bill,

      Time is a huge question for me. I like trying out new things and taking on new challenges but I try to pay close attention to what I am doing so that I am not over extended.

      If I can figure out a way to do a “proper” job than…

    Total tangent-
    I took my daughter, Madeleine, on a Mommy/Daughter date recently. The last time I bought movie theatre popcorn (my favorite thing in the whole world) a large bucket cost about $4. and was refillable, too. AND, the best part, it was smothered in butter!
    I just wanted popcorn as we window-shopped. It was $6/bag with NO butter (some crazy people decided it wasn’t good for human consumption any more!). I walked out with no popcorn. 🙁
    I like videos. Online it lets you feel like you know a person better.
    Hate trailers. But I read magazines from end to beginning, too. So someone like me wouldn’t like trailers no matter how good they were.
    Don’t like making videos.. My computer is too slow and doesn’t sync voice to lips. And I get too emotional.
    Those things are not most people’s problems when making videos! LOL!
    Good luck. Looking forward to them!

       @CrossBetsy I am a fan of videos but am conscious of the time. People can read through  posts faster than they can watch so it is important to try to make videos as captivating as possible.

      I don’t touch theater popcorn very often any more. I like it, but the cost in dollars and calories kills me. 😉

    That’s a brilliant idea Jack. I really enjoy watching the trailers when I’m at a movie theatre, and it’s still one of the best part of the experience. And I always buy a huge bag of popcorn, no matter how much it costs. It’s part of why I’m there 🙂

    I have started to create some videos myself, and most of them are fairly bad, but I’m learning. And I’m slowly getting better at it, so by the end of 2012, you’ll see some pretty awesome video tutorials on my blog 🙂

       @Jens Hi Jens,

      What I really want to do is make videos that are like the trailers but I don’t have the technical expertise or cash to hire a crew. But I am looking into alternatives to see if there is a reasonable compromise.

      I like your videos, especially when you show us around.
