How Many Bloggers Does It Take To Make a Sandwich

More than a couple of you left comments or sent me emails in which you said you weren’t fans of The Princess Bride and though I wanted to shout INCONCEIVABLE at you, I did not.

That is ok, I still might invite you to come sail with the Dread Pirate Roberts.

Blogging can be a funny medium in both the “I can’t stop laughing” and “this is odd” kind of way. I am told that I often make people feel both of those and I am good with that and hope you are too.

Let’s move on.

How Many Bloggers Does It Take to Make a Sandwich

That is the kind of headline I love because there are so many different directions you can run with it. And today my good people I am going to start by letting you know there is a giveaway in this post.

Ta Dah! Cue lights and music.

You’ll notice I didn’t put anything about that giveaway in the headline. That is because many of the folks in my Triberr tribes wouldn’t tweet, stumble and link to this and that would be a shame because there are layers in this post that extend beyond the giveaway. Keep reading and I promise you’ll see what I am talking about.

The SUBWAY FRESH FIT Tuscan Chicken Melt

I like Subway because it is quick, easy and provides more healthy options than other fast food joints. They also get the thumbs up from my kids which makes them almost golden in my book because it means I don’t get stuck in silly fights about what to eat and where.

Ok, that is not entirely true, but I can usually convince them to add more green things on their sandwich than I can at home and that is worth something to me.

This month Subway is promoting the Fresh Fit Tuscan Chicken Melt. I had one for lunch on Monday afternoon and was pleased with my meal. It was good. It was filling and it was probably better for me than the greasy burger and fries I was desperately craving.

Score one for will power.

Anyhoo, this week I am going to give away a $25 gift card to one lucky winner. The rules for this contest are simple:

  1. You must solve and explain Fermat’s Last Theorem.
  2. Compose an original song in my honor and make a video of yourself singing it.
  3. Ignore the first two items and follow the fourth.
  4. Comment on this post and trust that the random number generator will pick a winner.

Now we are going to find out who has solid reading comprehension skills.

If you were here you would have heard me use my D.J. voice to announce that you just finished listening to Adele sing Skyfall, the theme song to the latest James Bond movie.

I am a fan, of both James Bond and Adele.

Adele is blessed with a voice that has exceptional power. If I had the ability to sing well that is what  I want.

Let’s clarify it, I want a powerful man’s voice, not Adele’s. I’d sound funny if I sounded like a British woman. I am not Boy George.

A New Twitter Trick

If you are new to the blog you may wonder if I am capable of sewing all of the different themes, pieces and parts in my posts. My answer is “of course” but ultimately you are the judge.

I opened this post with a clip from a tweet I sent out earlier today. In the past when I wanted to share a tweet I had to take a screenshot or recreate it, but recent changes in Twitter have made it a much simpler process.

Now they give the option to expand the tweet so you can obtain code to embed and render the tweet on your blog. It is what I did above and something I think is quite useful.

Bloggers and Sandwiches

During this last visit to Subway I stood safely ensconced in my electronic bubble and stared at my Droid while trying to figure out how I was going to write the post you are reading.

I watched the three guys behind the counter work together to build and serve the sandwiches and thought about how it is similar to what we do here.

It is goofy, but I could draw a legitimate comparison between how the folks at Subway do their job and how we do ours. We may not ask each reader if they want pickles, lettuce and mustard on their sandwich but we do pay attention to what they are consuming and we do try to serve more of it.

The Fine Print

I observe FTC guidelines and will tell you I was compensated with my own gift card. I will also tell you the contest is open to people residing in the U.S.

Furthermore, while I liked this sandwich it is not my favorite food item on the Subway menu. I tend to lean towards a good Steak and Cheese or one of the egg breakfast sandwiches.

Go on now. Leave a comment and enter the contest. Winner to be picked on Friday.

“Inconceivable!” LOL! BTW, I’m still waiting for the specially balanced sword you promised to make for me.

Was there a problem shipping it across international boundaries or something?

  2. Sue Neal October 22, 2012 at 12:39 pm

Bear of little brain here still waiting for the punchline. So how many DOES it take?

That was an interesting post. What happens if you live in Canada? Will I have to send the prize to my US friend?

  4. Ralph October 21, 2012 at 4:41 am

    Hey Jack.

Big, big fan of James Bond. I have seen every one of those films and some many many times. I have to ask which is your favourite. Silly but it excites me. Up to a few years ago Live and Let Die took the top prize for me but with Daniel Craig’s recent films I am now partial to Casino Royale. The cheesiness of the Roger Moore era is hard to beat though.

Since I am Canadian there is no chance for me to win your gift card but alas I decided to comment anyway. Subway is a viable choice. They certainly have made an effort to up the game for fast food.

BTW, please drop by our place and vote on the TeamBlogJack Logo when you get a sec. Would love to know which you may prefer.

      Hi Ralph,

I loved Casino Royale. The Parkour chase was awesome. I have watched that part many times and wondered if I could do it.

Roger Moore holds a special place for me because as a kid I loved watching him fight Jaws. I think that Goldfinger might hold the top spot for me, but I need to think about it a bit more.

I’d love to try the new tuscan chicken sandwich…yum!

  6. BloggerFather October 19, 2012 at 9:31 am

I like Subway pizza. Don’t judge.

  7. vanita October 19, 2012 at 4:34 am

    dude, the tuscan chicken rocks!
also, have i told you enough how much i love your newsletter? not that i can forget you Jack…but the newsletter reminds me that Jack always has something funny…in an odd way…going on and it’s a great way to step back from work and just enjoy and many times learn something.
also, now that i’ve kissed ass, please enter me.

    • Jack October 19, 2012 at 4:32 pm

      Hi Vanita,

Thank you. I am glad you enjoy it. Sometimes I have a lot of fun writing them, but every now and then it makes me want to scream. Got a few ideas I want to implement there, but you’ll have to wait and see what happens. 😉

I loved Subway when I was a kid. Now, I avoid it. The last time I was stateside, I thought Quizznoes (did I spell that right) made an ok sandwich for a chain store.

Near the George Mason University Law School in Virginia, there’s a place called Marios that used to make a killer sandwich. I used to get the double steak and cheese and they used to lay a pound of chopped steak on that heart attack. Unfortunately, Mario’s was bought by a Pakastani man who screwed up the formula for a perfect sandwich in his foolish hopes of doubling the profit.

    • Jack October 19, 2012 at 4:30 pm

      Hi Stan,

For a chain it is pretty good, not my favorite but that is not a fair comparison. They can’t compete in the same way with some of the really good independents.

If I am not mistaken I have been to the Mario’s you speak of. It has been a long time, but I remember enjoying it.

I also liked Booeymongers, but that was in Georgetown.

    Hey Jack

I’m from the UK, so my comment is null and void I guess!

The video is working fine for me, so i got to see it. I can’t get enough of Adele either. What a voice. I would have loved to see her in the Royal Albert Hall in London but I’m hoping she might come up to Edinburgh some time soon.

Subway is another one of my favourites although I don’t have them too often these days. You’ve got my mind of them now though darn it! It’s 10 pm here so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow.

    • Jack October 19, 2012 at 4:18 pm

      Hi Tim,

Nah, your comment is still worth something but the rules won’t allow us to let Man U fans win. However if you sing You’ll Never Walk Alone and swear that Liverpool is your favorite club… 😉

I found time in between Adrienne’s comment and yours and switched out the video so that we had a copy that works.

I have seen clips of a concert Adele did at the Royal Albert that looked quite nice. So now I am curious, are there any Subways in Edinburgh?

I have been to a few outside of the states, including Canada and Israel so I wouldn’t be surprised.

  10. Brian October 18, 2012 at 12:05 pm

I like the blatant disregard for sandwich construction specialties. Those guys are pros at their tasks; do you know how hard it is to lay sliced cheese properly? Give me the prize and I will regift it to one of my followers. Let’s get this giftcard inception going already!

    • Jack October 19, 2012 at 4:09 pm

      Hi Brian,

“Blatant disregard for sandwich construction specialties” has got to be one of my favorite lines and you deserve credit for that. Alas we shall have to see if fortune smiles upon your regifting efforts.

  11. Adrienne October 18, 2012 at 10:41 am

So I guess you won’t think I’m dorky cause I enjoyed The Princess Bride. Yeah I know, so sue me.

Man, I was starting to freak about that contest now Jack but at the same time thinking he’d probably actually get someone to do that too. You just have that way about you. By the way, whoever put that video up on YouTube got their account yanked so it’s no longer playing. Didn’t get to hear the lovely Adele sing today darn it.

I love Subway but I don’t eat there often. I like their chicken and roast beef. Can’t go wrong with either. Kind of picky though with what I put on it but you just can’t go wrong there because there are so many choices.

Thanks Jack for the giveaway, clever way to go about this too. Good luck to the winner oh and to me too! 😉

    ~Adrienne

    • Jack October 19, 2012 at 1:28 pm

      Hi Adrienne,

It is good to see you. Thank you for the tip about the video, I have fixed it. Chicken and roast beef are good choices. You are right, can’t go wrong with either nor can you go wrong with The Princess Bride.

  12. Joe October 18, 2012 at 9:29 am

Love Bond. Sean Connery is my fave, but all the others are excellent as well. What a great franchise it is, and how lucky are we to have it. Adele is cool. Love her voice. Powerful and expressive.

Great idea to try a giveaway. I tried one a while back, giving away a copy of Chris Guillebeau’s book, and I got one comment. Total flop. But I received not one retweet or share from the author, so I learned a lesson. You need help to be successful. I will tweet this for you to do my part. 🙂

Hopefully you get a lot of comments. And you know whether I win or not, I’ll be commenting anyway. Meatball sub if I do take it home…

    • Jack October 19, 2012 at 9:21 am

      Hi Joe,

When I was a kid I thought Roger Moore was better, but I was nuts. Connery was great. I really like Craig and Brosnan too.

I have run several giveaways here, but as I mentioned before, I don’t run them like most bloggers do. I want the sponsors to do well, but it needs to fit with the blog.

Anyhoo, the meatball subs aren’t bad, I like them too.

  13. Annie Andre October 18, 2012 at 9:26 am

    Jack,
it’s not ” INCONCEIVABLE ” it’s “INCONthievable” with lots of spittle coming out. I think i’m the only one of my female counterparts who likes this movie. Could be because i have 2 teenage boys who like to watch these types of movies. HOLY GRAIL anyone?

OH, PICK ME ME ME ME ME.

    • Jack October 19, 2012 at 9:16 am

      Hi Annie,

I can neither confirm nor deny almost starting a bar brawl by screaming “INCONthievable” with a mouthful of peanuts at a drunk guy who was irritating people.

Holy Grail is on my list of favorites. My kids have heard me say “none shall pass” and the related lines more than a few times.

  14. Eve October 18, 2012 at 7:13 am

Well I hope the number generator picks me then. Thanks for the giveaway! I love subway

  15. Kate Finley (KateUpdates) October 18, 2012 at 6:41 am

OK, I actually don’t care about Subway very much since I’m eating Paleo currently. If I win, I’ll give it to my husband who hasn’t quite caught on to my way of eating …

    Several things:
    1. I’m new to your blog and wish I had found it sooner because you are clearly very smart AND funny. Smiling over here.
    2. Twitter tip = AWESOME
    3. I’m sharing this post (via Triberr) because of how you shared this contest. Out of the box and much more appealing then any of the others I’ve seen.
    4. Are there rocks ahead?

    ~ Kate

    • Jack October 19, 2012 at 7:06 am

      Hi Kate,

Welcome to the blog. I am glad you are here. I stumbled onto that feature on Twitter. It is new to me, but it might have been around for a while.

I appreciate your sharing this post. I do the occasional review and giveaway but I like to mix things up. I don’t want people to visit solely for the purpose of getting free stuff.

And to your last point, “If there are,we’ll all be dead.” 😉

  16. Betsy Cross October 18, 2012 at 3:20 am

Someday I’ll have a brain that can understand math quickly and easily! Once I understand something it’s locked in…until then, I obsess. Thanks, Jack.
Blogging..takes one to write, two to make it real and three to make it interesting, as long as the third adds something spicy…

    • Jack October 19, 2012 at 12:24 am

      Hi Betsy,

I get that way. When I don’t understand something and I am trying to figure it out I often find myself working for a good long while on figuring it out.

  17. Kristen October 18, 2012 at 2:57 am

As I was reading your rules to enter, I thought “good God.. J’s got more rules than me!”

For the record – always mayo never mustard. Pickles on the side.
