It is time for another edition of the Greatest Hits of Music Monday. Music is a constant presence in my life and were a genie to grant me 7 wishes two of mine would be for musical talent. In more specific terms I would gladly love the ability to sing and to play many instruments.

I plugged Maybelline into pandora and I’ve been hooked on that station lately. Chuck Berry, fats domino, bill haley, elvis. I haven’t listened to that stuff in so long, It’s great to hear it all again. I sound like an old fart, because that music was all before my time, but that’s the stuff my dad listened to and I got hooked on it from an early age.
I play guitar, when I have the time, and like the classic rock like the who, led zep, jam band stuff like allman bros, and disco biscuits, and instrumental oldies like ventures, dick dale, and of course early rock hits from beatles, pink floyd, etc.
Can’t stand jazz, i just don’t hear it, never have. I guess I’m just unrefined like that.

@DaddybyDefault Chuck Berry played at my high school. It was a few years before I got there but I remember hearing about it. I listen to all of the artists and bands you named. If you sift through my posts you’ll often find references, links and videos.
Jazz can be an acquired taste, some of it quite good and others…not so much.

@TheJackB very cool, he’s probably very good in concert. One of my friends was a jazz radio dj and he lent me some discs awhile back but I couldn’t get into it, and I pretty much like everything. I played the sax as a kid, but only because there were too many drummers in the band. Maybe it’s an adult aversion thing, who knows. Oh well.

No Armstrong, no Ellington, no Hawkins, no Hines: no Billie,, no Ella, no Sarah, no Carmen: no Oscar, no Wynton, no Herbie: there’s not even Miles or Leadbelly!
Why is it that so many Americans totally ignore the only art form created entirely within it’s own boundaries?
Ah Well…..de gustibus non disputandum est. Someone has to raise the cultural tone.

@Leon Who says that I ignore it? That was just a snapshot of what I happened to listen to that day. Besides, anyone who listens to Robert Johnson is likely going to be a fan of many of the artists you listed.

That is one of the talents I wish I had too Jack. To be a singer and if I could I would sing the blues. I love love love the blues but grew up on so many different types of music. Use to listen to Cat Stevens all the time but way back when Journey tug at me a lot. OMG I love their music and still do. Let’s see, then there was Boston, AC/DC (yeah I know), Aerosmith, of course the Beatles, Stevie Ray Vaughn (I LOVE Stevie), heck there are so many. If I had to name my all time favorite, I couldn’t. As for the writing, you know I’m going to write how I feel and to heck with everyone else. I’m a take it or leave it kind of girl myself. Thank goodness I haven’t had to many that have run the other direction. So far they have tolerated me even through my rants! 🙂 Love this list Jack, some really great choices!

You have a little bit of cowboy in you, huh? Jim Croce makes me cry. I hate that he wrote everything in a night and then died. I always listen to Ring of Fire in conjunction with Folsom Prison Blues and Ghostriders in the Sky. Along this line, Willie Nelson’s Redheaded Stranger and Waylon Jennings’ Rainy Day Woman.
Oddly, woke up the other morning and started writing fiction out of nowhere. Haven’t done that since 5th grade. Most unexpected.

@Julie | A Clear Sign It all depends on your definition of cowboy, but some would say that I have a lot in me. Johnny Cash is one of my all time favorites. All three of the songs you mentioned have special meaning to me. I like Waylon and Willie too.
Have fun with the fiction, I am biased but that is so much fun to write.

Man, Jim Croce really brings the childhood memories back. Hurt – Johnny Cash (can’t hear that one enough)! It’s tuff to find a Beatles song I don’t like, but I especially like to play “Abbey Road” or “Revolver” all the way through. Iron Maiden makes me think of some really stupid sh*t I did in high school. And, I wish, wish I had the talent of Robert Johnson or Eric Clapton.
And, thanks for the writing tip, I needed that!
FYI, my current Pandora channels: The Church, Queens of the Stone Age, The Clash, ELO, Outkast, Fatboy Slim, Arcade Fire, The Pixies, Ween, Ulrich Schnauss, Pink Floyd and The White Stripes and Johnny Cash. For now at least.
My question to you. How much vinyl do you own?

@Craig McBreen Hey Craig. I have used Pandora once or twice, never did get into it. Have to say that I like your channels- there is a lot on there that I can listen to. Not familiar with it all, but always willing to give music a try.
Iron Maiden used to be my favorite above all others. Been a long time since those days but I still enjoy it.
I have about 60 or so albums and a ton of 45s.

@TheJackB It just feels old school with all you kids jumping on Spotify 🙂 Thanks. I switch up the channels every now and then, but do like a range. I was just curious about the vinyl … I chucked all of mine years ago and kind of regret it.

@Craig McBreen I kept my turntable and in theory could play my vinyl at any time but the truth is that I haven’t in a number of years.
I tend not to use my CDs unless I am in the car.
Most of the time I use iTunes or Spotify.

Love that writing tip. For me, that is how I write, then I go and clean it up afterwards. Regarding those songs…I love Hurt. Picture is one of my favorites. I seen Kid Rock in concert and when he was singing that song, there was a helicopter that flew over us. It dropped off Sheryl Crow! She came out and began singing her part. It was such a surprise to all of us. Loved it! 🙂

@Joanne Cipressi It is really easy to over think things and get caught in a place where you are paralyzed because the words aren’t “enough” for you. It is easier and more efficient to write and edit afterwards.
That Kid Rock concert sounds like it was pretty cool. Johnny’s rendition of Hurt is awesome, I like it better than the NIN version.
