The Soundtrack of My Life

My friend Bill Dorman the man who is most definitely not an invisible blogger receives credit for inspiring me to write this post. In the spirit of giving I need to mention Danny Brown and Margie Clayman for similar reasons to Bill. And then for good measure I need to add Erica, Ameena, Gini, Shonali, Kaarina, Jessica and Brankica to this list.

If I am not mistaken I have shared Spotify lists and or discussed music with all of them. In truth though that is an incomplete list and there are a ton of other bloggers that I have had the pleasure to share music with. It is a cliche but music crosses borders, race and religion. It is a bridge between people and something that is of critical importance to me.

That is no secret to the 17 long time readers or any one else who has ever spent real time reading the blog. Roll through here and you’ll find entire posts devoted to sharing what I listened to that day. Sift through my fiction and you can rest assured that the posts are peppered with quotes and links to songs.  At one time I had a list of about 100 songs that served as the official soundtrack for this story.

If I had the time I would set the tone for every post by including at least one song in it. And one thing you can be certain of if I ever meet a real genie one of my three wishes will be to gain the ability to play/write music. Music is powerful, enlightening, educational and something that I find great joy in.

Music can be deeply personal and quite intimate, but it is meant to be communal. Music is designed to make you feel and it is something that should be experienced. So, please help us here by providing lists/links to your favorites. And don’t be afraid to leave quotes either, I love those.

If you have Spotify here is a whole list of links to a bunch of different playlists that you can sift through and enjoy:

40 Years

The Beatles

For Droid

Springsteen

@TheJackB@EricaAllison I think you have to be friends on Facebook to be able to see someone’s profile in the Spotify “People” column.

  2. TheJackB August 4, 2011 at 7:21 am

@EricaAllison@marianne.worley Maybe I am low on coffee, but where do I find your profile?

  3. EricaAllison August 4, 2011 at 7:00 am

@TheJackB@marianne.worley Can’t you just go to my profile and grab it? If you can, check out Makes me Smile. I tried to link it here, but all I got was my title, not the link.

@ericamallison Isn’t that the truth. Getting shorter all the time. 😉

  6. ericamallison August 4, 2011 at 2:37 am

@TheJackB hope so! That candle is only so long…

  7. TheJackB August 3, 2011 at 9:44 pm

@EricaAllison@marianne.worley Hi Erica. One of these days you need to share one of your lists. Since we do have similar taste I am confident that you listen to something/someone I am probably not familiar with. Would love to find out if I am right.

And I totally appreciate not being locked into one genre/style- part of the joy of music is being able to listen and appreciate all different types/kinds.

  8. TheJackB August 3, 2011 at 9:41 pm

@janetcallaway Hey Janet that is something that I do from time to time. It is a great idea and something that I think works pretty well.

It is all tied into my efforts to draw a picture for the readers that sets the tone and the mood. Sometimes it is harder than others, but I enjoy trying.

  9. TheJackB August 3, 2011 at 9:27 pm

@ericamallison Always glad to see you. Going to try to get to bed long before you wake up ‘cuz these crazy days are nuts.

  10. ericamallison August 3, 2011 at 5:43 pm

@thejackb I finally made it over! Crazy day…hope yours is ending well. Course you stay up til I wake up, so you still have some time yet!

  11. EricaAllison August 3, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Jack, I’m here, finally! I love your play lists…you and I definitely have similar tastes in music…

And like Ms @marianne.worley down there, Billy Squire just rocks it. I’m envious that she saw him and so many others; like you and your Ray Charles thing. Man, that’s just flat out awesome.

As you know, I’m a music lover as well and I tend to associate people with music, times in my life with music, and use it to get me through the day – writing, in particular. Your odds and ends is a good one, by the way.

I also like to mix it up and throw in the unexpected. I don’t want to be classified into one genre or style of music, so my taste is all over the place. Thanks for sharing yet another list and side to you!

  12. EricaAllison August 3, 2011 at 5:36 pm

    @TheJackBericamallison Yes????

  13. janetcallaway August 3, 2011 at 5:10 pm

Jack, aloha. What a great post. Stan Faryna is another one who is big on music. He is creating his podcasts with Adrian Klein handling the music.

Maybe what you should do for future posts, Jack, or at least some of them, is to put at the top that “_______” is playing in the background or is the theme music for this post.

Thx so much for sharing your playlists. Aloha. Janet

  14. TheJackB August 3, 2011 at 2:03 pm

@3hatscomm Thanks. I’ll be downloading music today too. Got a few songs that I need to add- they help to set the tone.

  15. jennwhinnem August 3, 2011 at 12:21 pm

    @3hatscomm hey! nice new photo!

  16. 3HatsComm August 3, 2011 at 10:11 am

Could almost be my playlist, my iTunes is so eclectic — just a mix of everything. Clicking some of these reminds me to move them to iPod, so I can hear them more often. If you’re ever in the mood for strummy alt rock pop stuff, lemme know. FWIW.

  17. TheJackB August 3, 2011 at 12:14 am

@marianne.worley I had a lot of friends at that Springsteen concert but am sorry to say that I didn’t get to see it live.

  18. marianne.worley August 2, 2011 at 8:11 pm

Good thing I have Klout in typos–it’s Billy Squier, doh! Loving Spotify–no need to go to my CD library to find my old stuff.

  19. marianne.worley August 2, 2011 at 7:40 pm

Ooooh, you started with Billy Squire! Awesome. I saw him at the LA Forum when I was 17. It was 2nd best concert I ever attended. #1? Springsteen’s Born in the USA tour, LA Coliseum. That was when doing the wave was “in”: seeing 100K people do the wave 20 times in a row was amazing. Were you there too?

  20. TheJackB August 2, 2011 at 4:11 pm

    ericamallison Your presence is requested.

  21. bdorman264 August 2, 2011 at 1:35 pm

    @TheJackB I might roll it out then……………..yikes………….

  22. TheJackB August 2, 2011 at 12:18 pm

@bdorman264 I cut and paste from old posts so I have to keep digging through these links to make sure that they work.

I’d be very interested in seeing what you listen to Bill. I know from previous interactions that we have similar taste and wonder if you are listening to things that I am not but should be.

  23. TheJackB August 2, 2011 at 12:16 pm

@Hajra Thanks. Now all we have to do is find that genie and make him/her help us out. We’re not asking all that much. 🙂

  24. bdorman264 August 2, 2011 at 12:15 pm

I’m going to copy and paste: Music can be deeply personal and quite intimate, but it is meant to be communal. That’s what I meant to say…………

Wow, quite the list and I’ll have to check the links. Pretty impressive and it’s obvious music plays a very big part in your life. Music has the ability to transport you to another place in time.

This is pretty cool; I’ll have to build my Spotify from scratch if I’m going to share. If I downloaded my iPod and shared that there might be a few heads being scratched.

I did see Linkin Park up there……..

Good to see you Jack and thanks for the shout out.

  25. Hajra August 2, 2011 at 10:22 am

I like the list! And I still have to go visit Bill Dorman and see what he is playing at his invisible end!

I agree with the genie thing, if only genies existed, power to play and sing without causing a threat to people around me would be my genie grant me wish!

  26. TheJackB August 2, 2011 at 10:01 am

@weforgotyounot it is an old favorite of mine.

  27. weforgotyounot August 2, 2011 at 9:53 am

@TheJackB It finally loaded. Used to be so easy to make people laugh! That was crazy.

  28. TheJackB August 2, 2011 at 9:51 am

@TLanceB I am a music fan. Can’t get enough of it. Only wish I had real time to devote to it.

  29. TLanceB August 2, 2011 at 9:37 am

Me, the snob, likes a lot of this list.

You are pretty open minded for a Springsteen fan.

  30. TheJackB August 2, 2011 at 8:10 am

@weforgotyounot Hi Betsy. The box is a video. It sounds like it didn’t load on your computer.

@JessicaNorthey Can’t wait to see your list. I love these types of exchanges. It is an easy way to learn about people and get introduced to great music.

@Soulati | PR Thanks Jayme. Not really sure why so many of these links rendered with the strikethru- but they should play and that is the goal.

  35. Soulati August 2, 2011 at 4:26 am

Wow. You put link love to shame, Jack.

  36. JessicaNorthey August 2, 2011 at 3:34 am

I love this! Did something similar to this for a radio station I used to work at we all did a soundtrack of our life…I have to find it and share it. It’s a lovely idea! your music taste is awesome!! 😀

  37. weforgotyounot August 2, 2011 at 3:00 am

    Hey Jack!

Great list! Is it my computer (more than likely) or is the black box supposed to have something in it?
