(CNN) — As Hurricane Frances bears down on the United States, weather trackers are sounding the alarm. Yet Frances may only be the first in a series of large, powerful storms to march across the Atlantic in coming years.

For years people have asked me how I can live in California. They have this funny idea that we have major earthquakes every day. They seem to forget that every year I read about hurricanes, tornados and snowstorms that kill and destroy with reckless abandon.

Mother nature has a way of showing us just how small we are in the scheme of things. If we could figure out a way to harness the power of these incidents we could do so much.
