A Secret Confession

When I was a child and we would sing Puff the Magic Dragon in school it used to make me cry. Whenever we got to this section:

“A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And PUFF that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.”

I didn’t like saying goodbye then and I still do not like it now.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who got a little misty at the end of that song. I sued to think it was so sad.

I still tear-up. That part of the song breaks my heart.

We learned this version in Sunday School:

    Puff the Kosher Dragon
    Lived in Palestine
    And frolicked in the synagogue
    And drank Shapiro’s wine

    Little Rabbi Goldberg
    loved that kosher Puff
And fed him lox and matzo balls
    and other kosher stuff

    Then one day it happened,
    Puff was eating pork.
Little Rabbi Goldberg took that dragon for a walk.
Gently he explained that dragons don’t eat meat
that comes from little piggies who have filthy, dirty feet.

This version is permanently etched in my mind. I cannot sing the song the real way. 🙂
