If you don’t know what a jughandle is consider yourself lucky. I have been to about 38 of the 50 states and New Jersey is the only one that seems to be afflicted with this foolish traffic hazard.

    SD,

We can always rely upon you for key information.

    Ellie,

    Absolutely.

    Elie,

I don’t like traffic circles much either.

Boy was I confused by those things when I first moved here! I still remember my wife, a born Jersey girl, patiently explaining “yes, you need to be on the right to make a left“! Now I’m used to the jughandles, but still chuckle when I see out-of-state drivers looking bewildered.

I do prefer them to traffic circles though. Circles are an accident waiting to happen.

Whew! Makes me happy I only live in the “implied crosswalk” state…. 😉

NJ has been getting rid of its traffic circles (and Maryland’s started using them). I also believe that jughandles are getting phased out.

However, not all jughandles are bad. (But some are very bad.)

    They are exceptionally irritating.

I HATE jughandles! I go up to NJ a lot and they never fail to make me crazy!
