Sarkozy Calls Obama Weak

This isn’t really the sort of response we want Obama to receive from other world leaders. OTOH, France hasn’t really been a significant world power for far longer than they care to admit. Take the criticism for what it is worth.

The US President is weak, the Spanish leader is dim, the German Chancellor is clinging on to France’s coat-tails and the head of the European Commission is irrelevant.

That, at any rate, is the world according to President Sarkozy, who has spent the week airing his unvarnished opinions of Barack Obama and an array of international politicians — abruptly ending France’s honeymoon with the US and needling Washington on several strategic issues.

In the latest in a stream of accounts from the Élysée Palace, Mr Sarkozy was quoted yesterday as telling an all-party group of MPs that Mr Obama was inexperienced and indecisive. “Obama has a subtle mind, very clever and very charismatic,” the French President said. “But he was elected two months ago and had never run a ministry. There are a certain number of things on which he has no position. And he is not always up to standard on decision-making and efficiency.”

The US President had underperformed on climate change when they met, Mr Sarkozy said, according to an account of the MP’s session in the newspaper Libération. “I told him, ‘I don’t think that you have quite understood what we are doing on carbon dioxide’.”Mr Sarkozy was apparently irked by media reports that Mr Obama had saved the day in London by persuading President Hu of China to reach a compromise with France over tax havens. Mr Sarkozy’s version is that he shamed Mr Obama into action, telling him: “You were elected to build a new world. Tax havens are the embodiment of the old world.”

LBJ, Jews and Israel

Meryl tipped me off to this post. Here is an excerpt:

“The Texas congressman’s district had only 400 Jews, but clearly the Johnson family’s Christian teachings had given him a strong affinity for Jews and their return to the Holy Land.

Five days after taking office in 1937, LBJ broke with the “Dixiecrats” and supported an immigration bill that would naturalize illegal aliens, mostly Jews from Lithuania and Poland. In 1938, Johnson was told of a young Austrian Jewish musician who was about to be deported from the United States. With an element of subterfuge, LBJ sent him to the U.S. Consulate in Havana to obtain a residency permit. Erich Leinsdorf, the world famous musician and conductor, credited LBJ for saving his live.

Johnson Saved Hundreds of Jews

That same year, LBJ warned a Jewish friend that European Jews faced annihilation. Somehow, Johnson provided him with a pile of signed immigration papers that were used to get 42 Jews out of Warsaw. But that wasn’t enough. According to historian, James M. Smallwood, Congressman Johnson used legal and sometimes illegal methods to smuggle “hundreds of Jews into Texas, using Galveston as the entry port. Enough money could buy false passports and fake visas in Cuba, Mexico, and other Latin American countries. … Johnson smuggled boatloads and planeloads of Jews into Texas. He hid them in the Texas National Youth Administration…. Johnson saved at least four or five hundred Jews, possibly more..””

A Date Which Will Live In Infamy

Fred Thompson- Your Next President

People, mark my words, if Fred Thompson drops his hat into the presidential circus ring he will have an outstanding chance to win. I don’t base that upon any sort of careful review or analysis of his policies.

I say this because he is an excellent communicator and in this day that counts for an awful lot. You can call me a cynic but I don’t believe that large portions of the voting population spend significant time trying to understand how the candidates promises can be translated into reality.

There is a dearth of logical thought and critical reasoning that makes it easy for people with a pleasant manner and an air of educated import to use. Don’t get me wrong, I do not agree with many who maintain that most Americans are stupid or ignorant. It is a stereotype that people fall back upon when it suits their own positions.

However, that doesn’t change my gut feeling that Thompson could very easily become the next president. After the polarization of the country through two Bush admins, a war that is highly unpopular and so much other mishegahs the time is ripe for someone who can deliver a message effectively.

I am curious to see how things develop.
