Writing Is Simple and So Is Guest Posting

July 5, 2012 by Jack Steiner 19 Comments

My name is Jack and I am a dad blogger who writes about parenting, life, business and social media. Sometimes I write fiction like this post about New Year’s Eve or dreams.

I love to write and I decided a while back that it was time to get serious about writing the books that are trapped inside my head. So I started another blog so that I could focus on moving those stories from inside my melon to paper.

Blogging has been a blessing for me. It has enabled me to focus on my love for writing in ways that I never could have imagined. It has led to new friendships, business opportunities and expanded my world.

Three Paragraphs

It took three paragraphs to pass along a ton of information about who I am, what I do and what I want to do.

If I did a proper job those 117 words did more than provide you with information about who I am and what I dream about. They helped provide a connection between you and I.

I didn’t try to be clever or funny, nor did I try to impress you by demonstrating my enormous vocabulary. That is not because my vocabulary is limited because it is not. I love words and I have a much larger vocabulary than most people.

But the point of this post isn’t to let you know that I can construct an essay that would fit in an academic journal or be appropriate for publishing in legal/medical journals.

Simple is not better, it is best.

I want everyone who reads this to find it easy to follow along so there is no reason for me to write a tome. We can save that for a different day when we intentionally revisit our posts on obscure and useful vocabulary words.

Writing Is Simple

Writing is simple. You need a beginning, middle and end. The problem some writers face is they forget about the value of simplicity and unnecessarily complicate what should have been a simple story about XYZ.

The desire to go viral is a part of the problem. People have this crazy urge to create something that is going to be read by millions so they create some cockamamie photo or video and stick a bunch of words around it with the thought that their new Internet version of Frankenstein’s Monster is going to be big.

It is a mistake.

The funny thing about it all is that blogging provides a great opportunity to be a mad scientist. It is a perfect environment for experimenting, provided you don’t forget that sometimes your monster can turn on you. They aren’t all cute ogres with Scottish accents and talking donkeys.

But What About The Guest Posts

I am glad you asked. Guest posts are an interesting animal. In concept a guest post provides both parties with a great opportunity.

The host doesn’t have to prepare content and the guest gets the chance to show off their skills to a new audience. In theory the guest runs around promoting the host blog as a great place that everyone should visit.

And why shouldn’t they. Everyone knows that only the best writers are granted an opportunity to guest post over there.

In my head I get this image of the fox looking at the hen house. He can’t wait for the invitation he is about to receive because once he is in he knows that he is going to eat like a king.

Forgive my cynicism, but this is how I see a lot of the guest posting on the business blogs. It probably isn’t accurate for many of them, but…

What I like about guest posting is the idea that it pushes you a little bit harder to write something special. It is extra motivation for you. A chance to try to step your game up a little bit.

But that doesn’t mean that you should let go of simplicity either. This is where you try to focus on coming up with a really good topic. Pick something that feeds your fire so that when you write you feel a greater sense of interest and investment.

If you do that and you include personality and purpose good things will come of it, just keep it simple.

Every story has a beginning, a middle and an end.

I am in the middle of my story. I am in the place where I have just figured out what I want to do with my life and am trying to determine how to make that happen.

How about you? Where are you at? Do you know what you want to do?

What Music Do You Dance To?

July 5, 2012 by Jack Steiner 9 Comments

‎”Hell, there are no rules here– we’re trying to accomplish something.” Thomas A. Edison

I haven’t decided yet if this post is going to be a mix of the mundane and the majestic or something entirely different. Don’t know that I need to make a decision because sometimes the joy of journey is in the walk to wherever it is I am heading.

Been listening to Springsteen sing Tunnel of Love all day and all night now. Never get tired of it. In between I have been listening the 1812 Overture and a bunch of other stuff as well.

Caught myself dancing last night, not just dancing but moving with reckless abandon. This doesn’t happen often.

You have to understand that I have a body built for demolition and not for grace. These aren’t words that I just use for writing either. They are as good a self description as you will find of how I see myself.

Someone once described me as a man who has meat paws for hands and said that I lumber through life. Now I don’t know that I agree with that. I am not clumsy and though I may not be Michael Jordan I am relatively athletic.

But my perception is that I look silly when dancing so consequently I am quite cognizant of space and light on the dance floor. That is a euphemistic way for saying that I am careful about when and where I will dance.

Still that doesn’t mean that I won’t dance or that there isn’t music that makes me move. Both of the songs above and the two contained here make me move. Maybe I am growing more comfortable with some things and less concerned about others.

Don’t know that it matters, I am just thinking out loud. Maybe I should read Julie’s post about signs again and think about it.

The Universe Is Speaking To Me & I Am Listening

In the quiet of the night I might admit to you that I have gone past the place where I say that I am agnostic about whether the universe speaks to us. I might admit to accepting there are more than a few things that I can’t explain or understand.

I am good with that. It is ok.

So I am just running with the feeling and sharing a few thoughts about this and that with you.

Blogging is not an obligation. It should be fun and if you aren’t having fun with it than I want to know what you are doing. Are you writing because you are getting paid for it? Are you writing because you think it will help build your business?

I do it because I have to.

Really. It is something that I am compelled to do because words are a part of me. I live and breathe them. I suspect that my friend Judy might understand that. I am sure that many others do too.

I am a professional writer.

Who I Was and Who I Am

Gini and Bill might tell you that I am Dear Abby but I am most definitely not. If you don’t read my blog you probably haven’t stumbled onto any of my professional work.

But I am working on changing that. Got things in motion that should do as Danny asks in this post. I would like to say that I am farther along than I am. I would like to say that but it is not true.

That doesn’t mean that I am denying my urge to climb or that I have declared myself done because I am just getting started. You see it took me a few years to figure out what I was supposed to be doing and then a bit more to set things in motion so that I could make it all happen.

I suppose that you could say it has been slower because there isn’t a map for me to follow or a guide that I can use for a quick and easy install. There is just me learning as I go along.

These lessons cover a wide variety of topics. Some of them are simple things about writing. There is a story and stories that I have to tell that surprise me because this is not something that I ever thought would be part of my writing. But when I write about these tales people respond.

They ask questions and make requests for more.

I wrestle with some of this. I can provide more. It comes out of me far more easily than I ever would have guessed and I wonder why people don’t get bored with it. And then I wonder why ask why. If people like it and want it than I should write it.

Why?

Because I am a writer and I want to tell and sell my stories.

I know a few things about social media too. Sometimes I write about that because it interests me and it interests you.

Mostly I listen to the music inside my mind and try to let that out so that you hear what I hear. It is what makes me dance.

What about you?

The Proper Length Of a Blog Post

July 3, 2012 by Jack Steiner 32 Comments

And So It Goes– Billy Joel

Kathy’s Song– Simon & Garfunkel

Always On My Mind– Elvis Presley

In My Life– The Beatles

She accused me of plagiarism and gave me 12 ‘F’s. Don’t ask me to try and explain how I received those 12 failing marks on one paper because I can’t tell you.

It happened twenty-six years ago and I simply don’t remember what sort of cockamamie grading system she had in place. I remember her black wig and how she liked to eat raw sticks of butter.

And I remember how she told me that my writing was inferior. It made me angry but I didn’t let that stop me. When she refused to listen to me and insisted that I had cheated on my paper I decided that she was unhinged.

Of course that was before I noticed the wig and sticks of butter. When you are a 17  year-old boy you tend not to notice that kind of stuff because you are too busy trying to look cool in front of the girls.

I don’t know that I ever managed to pull off cool, but I think it is fair to say that I learned how to write. That is assuming that you accept her insistence that my writing was inferior.

I suppose it is possible that it was, but I doubt it. Since I don’t have any of the papers I wrote for that class you’ll have to decide if you accept her word or mine.

Writing Isn’t About Limits

Every week I try to participate in several different online writing groups. Some of these groups provide writing prompts for us to write about. In addition to a topic they usually provide a word count and ask that we not exceed it.

I hate word counts. I don’t like limits. Writing isn’t about limits.

Writing is about telling a story. It is about using words to paint a picture inside the minds of the readers.

Word counts create limits that impact the tales that must be told.

Don’t limit yourself. Don’t let your stories be ripped apart, shredded and destroyed by the limits of length. A tale must be as long as it needs to be to be told.

Tighten Your Tale

A while back someone told me that word counts were a good way to instill discipline in our writing. They said we should limit our words to only those we require to tell the tales that must be told.

My response was that “brevity can bite me.”

That is because my stories are going to be as long as they need to be. I wish that I had told the Butter Eater to adjust her wig and suck on another salty stick. She wasn’t supposed to try to crush the imaginations and dreams of her students.

Don’t get me wrong because she didn’t crush mine. She lit a fire under my ass and made me want to prove her wrong. But that is neither here nor there.

When you are telling the tales that must be told you need to just write. You need to put pen to paper or fingertip to keyboard and let the words flow forth. Write first and edit later.

Word counts cause confusion because they create a condition in which you let your internal editor take creative control. Don’t do that. Write with reckless abandon and use as many words as you need.

I am not repetitive because I am forgetful. I am repetitive because it is necessary.

Tell A Story

A story has a beginning, a middle and an end. Every story you write needs those three things. Go read It Was Logical and you’ll find them there waiting for your visit.

Word counts are for bad stories. Word counts are for worriers who wonder how they are going to read 100 papers. Word counts are for very specific papers and purposes but they should only be used as guidelines and not as law.

Learn how to tell the tales that must be told with talent and you won’t ever have to worry about a word count again.

And now if you will excuse me I am going to start stretching because in a moment I am going to be chased by a thousand angry editors. So I am going to run and lead them on a merry chase hither and thither.

Once they are exhausted and worn out from our time on the road I shall sit down and let them know that I believe in brevity. I will tell them that we should all work on tightening our tales and using fewer words to tell them.

But it should only be done after we have spit out how ever many words it takes to tell the tales that must be told.

Just write my friends without wonder or worry. Just write without regard for word count, editors or readers because when you do that your passion will come out and your personality will prevail.

Success shall be ours.

Things Bloggers Say During Sex

July 2, 2012 by Jack Steiner 18 Comments

I am four cups of coffee into what is going to be a 23 cup day and my fingers are flying across the keyboard. Yes I know this is the sort of headline that makes some people crazy and that is exactly why I used it.

I wanted attention. I wanted your attention. It is why I once wrote a post called I Should Have Slept With Her…. Again and 69 Reasons Why Fathers Make Better Lovers.

It is why I considered headlines such as Don’t Have Sex While Blogging or What Daddy and Mommy Do While You Are Sleeping.

Blame it on my irritation with the blogosphere and the typical social media summer slow down. It happens every year and I can guarantee that by August you will start seeing more posts about how blogging is dead or dying.

It is hogwash and it simply isn’t true. Blogging and our beloved blogosphere is alive and well, thriving in fact.

What About Your Headline?

What about my headline? Do you really want me to come up with a list of things that bloggers say during sex or would it be better to tie it into a post about the boundaries of blogging.

It would be easy to write about the boundaries of blogging. I have written several posts about it and that is a topic that never grows old. There are a million different angles to go with it.

Heck, we could tie it into the post that Shakirah wrote. I am not talking about her piece on Writer’s Block but the guest post she wrote for Ken called Can You Ever Be Big Enough To Blog About Anything You Want?

Actually both pieces are worth reading but we are going to focus on the latter for two reasons:

1) Technically my blog is a personal blog which means the rules are a bit different than they are for a business blog. However it has generated a bunch of freelance work so in a sense it is also a business blog and consequently I sometimes catch myself editing things here in a way I never used to do.

2) It is good conversation and something worth thinking about. Some actors don’t like taking certain roles because they worry about being typecast. I think it is a concern that some writers have too. Maybe it is part of why I like to write anything and everything. I never worry about being stuck in a hole.

I know from conversations and email that many of you have similar goals for your blogging careers to me.  We are all working on trying to develop great content that generates tons of comments, pageviews and notoriety that leads to book deals and or writing opportunities that allow us to become full time writers.

The question that we all ask is how do we make this happen and what can we do to speed the process along. Ok, that is actually two questions and not one. You can  make the typical joke about this being evidence of poor math skills and a reason why I am a writer.

Does self deprecating humor work? I don’t know. Stop distracting me.

The seven posts below provide a random sample of some of my most popular work. If you review them you will see there are several themes. They are a collection that includes fiction, posts about writing, parenting and social media.

From my perspective the two things that really make them work are the focus on story telling and upon people. That is because we all relate to those things.

  1. Lessons For Being Human
  2. Is There A Benefit To Paying for Facebook Fans For Your FB Fan Page?
  3. Do We Really Need Another Email Newsletter?
  4. The Silly Versus The Sublime
  5. 1 Foolproof Way To Become a Better Writer
  6. He Died A Hero
  7. Wind and Waves

Building Upon The Foundation

I don’t believe in there only being one way to succeed in social media or to create a popular blog.  You will always need great content and consistency. You will always need to sustain your effort, but don’t let people fool you into thinking that you have to do it their way.

Your way is often best because it is easiest to be you.

If you are among the long time readers you have noticed that I like to write these posts so that they resemble a conversation. We are drinking coffee or hanging out at a barbecue.

The goal is to connect and build relationships. I am a daddy blogger. I am an executive. I am a son and a brother. I am a person and so are you.

If I do my job properly you see the human side of me and I see yours. This is how we connect in person and this is how we connect online.

And as a P.S.A. to the men let me suggest that you not try blogging during sex. I am not a woman, but I am guessing that many would be quite unhappy if you chose to spend your tender moment tapping away on the keyboard.

Of course, I could be wrong. It wouldn’t be the first time and it won’t be the last. 😉
